Have you heard about ‘The New Look Effect’? Have you felt it? Get to know the powerful impact UNL is having on youth through the eyes of Atlanta 11th grader, DenisèAnn Shields!
I first joined the Usher’s New Look family in October of 2014, and my “spark” is entertainment. I do anything from dancing, singing, acting to playing the piano. I love to be on the stage!
Before New Look
The greatest obstacles I’ve faced growing up are overcoming adversity and peer pressure. Many of my school friends wanted me to stop striving for the top. They had the mentality of only getting by or ‘passing’, while I’ve always been the type to go above and beyond. The other kids in school tried to make me feel like I didn’t need to, which resulted in mass peer pressure. People said I was too happy, “Why you always happy all the time??’. Through Usher’s New Look, I have defined in myself a sense of authority. I have learned that it’s not a crime to keep a positive attitude, strive for the top or go above and beyond. Beneficial training in New Look, has made me realize that I am an original who doesn’t need to fit in society’s box. It is not okay to only pass when I could be reaching for the stars. I have learned through New Look that reaching for the stars and taking chances is the only way to get where you want to be in life.
My “New Look”
Some of my greatest achievements and experiences since being in New Look include, attending UNL’s United to Ignite Awards Luncheon where I got the opportunity to network with successful business owners such as the CEO of Saks Fifth Ave, meeting Usher Raymond IV, delivering clothes to homeless people, interning with the City of Atlanta Office of Film and Entertainment, backstage passes to concerts where I got to network with people in my same line of interest and landing a job with HBO on a movie set.
In the future, I am considering a career in the film industry, being that I already have experience and connections in that work field. However, eventually I will be running for Senator!
Thank you New Look
New look has impacted my life by making me realize that I can do anything, and truly believe it! By opening doors in my life that I never would’ve had the resources to reach otherwise. I definitely see myself giving back as an alumni and becoming an Mogul in Training when I get to college.
