I started going to the New Look program in the beginning of ninth grade. My spark is acting. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve loved being on stage. When I was in plays, I felt like I could escape and go into my own little world and be me for once, even though I was pretending to be someone else. Acting is my life it’s what I live for.
Before Usher’s New Look
My biggest obstacle I faced growing up was my confidence. I never believed in myself. I always second guessed myself. My self-esteem was really low. Since I’m the youngest of three and my brothers didn’t turn out so great, I always wanted to make my mom proud. Sometimes that didn’t turn out so great. New Look has taught me I’m my own person. I’m going to make mistakes, I’m human. I always have to believe in myself, because if I don’t believe in me who will?
My “New Look”
Some things I have achieved since I’ve been in this program were interviewing the special guests who came and met us at the Brooklyn Leadership Academy. They told me how they’ve started in their careers and where they are now. That boost up my confidence, because I can ask questions and then introduce them to the other Academy kids. I don’t really like talking in front of people, so the more I interview the more comfortable I get talking to a large group of people.
When I grow up I want to be an actress. Things that I’m doing to help me get there is telling my mom about auditions. When I tell her she will be able to clear her schedule to take me to the auditions so I can get exposed to the acting lifestyle. If that doesn’t work, I would like to become a lawyer. Things that I’m doing to help me get there is doing really good in school. My GPA is a 3.0 and I’m looking up college programs that I can go to in the summer. I’ve found one summer program at Spelman College and I will be attending there this summer to get college credits. When I’m there I will be practicing on my SAT so I can get ready for them in 12th grade.
Thank You New Look
New look has impacted my life in a really big way, ways that I can’t even explain. Because of New Look I’ve looked at my future more and I see how I can provide for myself and my family when I grow up. New Look has me thinking for the long run. It also has helped me get out my comfort zone and branch out a little more. Usher’s New look has helped me realize that staying on track and getting good grades in school will take me far. As a African American young woman you should always have an educational background. It has also taught me that giving back is the best way to help people, because if someone helped you to get to where you are, you should want to help someone get to where there they want to be. This is why I see myself giving back as a New Look alumni someday.
