In Usher’s New Look’s 4-year high school Leadership Academy program, each grade level corresponds to one of The Four Pillars: Talent, Education, Career and Service. Senior year is the service year. Seniors in each Academy city are tasked with creating a unique service project. UNL Atlanta High School Seniors, Lameria Primrose, Helena Devone and Jacob Skinner came up with the creative idea to honor young men in Atlanta Public Schools by getting 150 new suits and free hair cuts donated to them for prom.
The project, which they named ‘Buttoned Up Gold’, was launched from their realization that people often do things for girls around prom season, such as donating dresses, make-up, hair and other services, but no one ever does anything for the young men. Thanks to the help of Lameria’s mother, Kristin, the group was able to bring their vision to life through a partnership with CorporateCode, an organization that receives gently used suits from local tux shops. In addition, Proway Barber School donated vouchers for a free haircut for each student. Dozens of young men showed up to the UNL Spark Lab to be fitted and pick up their suits. With many extra suits leftover, the students plan to do a second event in the near future.
