New Look sends a warm congratulations to our fourth year Detroit leader, Adrian Avery, for receiving the Dr. Gerald K. Smith Humanitarian Scholarship Award. This award, named after Dr. Gerald K. Smith (July 1941-August 2008), founder of Detroit Youthville, is given to an individual who demonstrates the consistent qualities of a humanitarian by carrying out Dr. Smith’s visionary leadership.
Dr. Smith spent his entire life as an advocate for families, youth and communities, and made a substantial difference in the lives of many young people. He was the product of a vast community and believed when kids are provided opportunities to be constructively involved and have caring adults in their lives, they make better choices, which help them become better adults.
In response to receiving the scholarship, Adrian told New Look, “I am a Senior at Osborn High School. I was nominated for this scholarship because of my outstanding involvement in my school and the Detroit community. I am on the Youth Violence Prevention Team, 4-H Community Outreach Club, BuildOn, Choir, Usher’s New Look. All of these roles have made me a helpful, responsible, and active leader. Many people see me as daring and resilient. I am grateful to be nominated and rewarded with the scholarship.”
Great work Adrian!
