Courage Isn’t The Lack of Fear

“When I was a kid growing up I was scared a lot. My parents moved frequently so I had to change schools quite a few times. I got beat up and picked on because I was new and because I was a good kickball player. Seriously. I would disturb the hierarchy of best kickball players, making some kid angry enough to punch me. As a result, I was often apprehensive in new situations. I felt scared, but also sad and powerless because I thought I lacked courage. It seemed like, when courage had been given out, I had been skipped over.”
