Happy International Women’s Day from UNL!

Usher’s New Look empowers young women by exposing them to experiences around the four pillars of talent, education, career and service and connecting them with opportunities to learn from inspirational women mentors. These women are helping our girls achieve 100% high school graduation rates, find career pathways they truly love, and give back to other young women through service. On this International Women’s Day we bring you some alarming statistics about opportunity for women in the United States. These are the reasons Usher’s New Look’s programs are fighting for youth education & equal opportunity each day and why you should too!

  •  Girls who drop out of high school are more likely to have children at a younger age and to be single parents. Children of single, young mothers are more likely than other students to drop out of school. Half of all single mothers in the U.S. who receive public assistance were teenagers when they had their first child.
  • According to the latest U.S. Census Bureau data, women in the United States are paid just 77 cents for every dollar paid to men on average. But a closer look reveals that for African-American women, this disparity is much worse, with women of color earning just 70 cents for every dollar paid to men and just 64 cents for every dollar paid to white, non-Hispanic men.
