Melvin Taylor just started his New Look journey and his first year of high school in Atlanta! He is fresh to our programs and eager to learn how to achieve his goal of becoming a Chef when he grows up. Get to know him below!
When and how did you discover New Look?
Last year, when I was in 8th grade at McNair Middle School, my teachers chose me to participate in Usher’s New Look. They came to my school to conduct a Powered by Service training. This was my first time ever hearing about New Look, but I knew I wanted to be a part of it right away.
Did New Look Help you discover your spark? What is it?
Yes it did. My spark is culinary arts. During Powered by Service day, New Look taught us about the Four Pillars of their programs, which are TALENT, EDUCATION, CAREER and SERVICE. They asked me to think of something I was passionate about. I really like to bake and cook foods. They asked me if I wanted to make a career out of it, and I do. Now I know I need to do whatever it takes to become a chef because that will be a career I’ll really enjoy doing.
Describe your life currently? What’s your outlook on life like?
My outlook on life is that I still want to cook it’s just that I now know New Look will help me find more opportunities to do what I like. This week they connected me with a job shadow with Mr. Chef Delroy. He is a celebrity chef who has cooked for people from P. Diddy to Justin Bieber. He is also opening a restaurant in Atlanta. I think my biggest obstacle is that people say I won’t be able to be a chef. I want to get into the kitchen and prove them wrong.
What are your future goals and career plans? What are your dreams?
My future goal is to one day own my own restaurant. I’m excited for New Look to teach me what I need to do to be successful.
Do you want to go to college? What schools or states are you interested in going to school at?
Yes I do want to go to college. I’m not really sure what state I want it to be in though. I think culinary school in New York would be cool.
