New Look 101! How Our Program Works

Usher’s New Look develops youth from under served communities into Global Youth Leaders by way of Access, Awareness and Empowerment.  For those of you who are not familiar with how our program works, here it is in a nutshell!

Students begin our program in 8th grade through Powered by Service training, where they identify their TALENT and how to use it to effect change in their community. This is when they receive their Local Leadership Certificate, the first of three leadership certifications backed by Emory University.

Next, select students identified by their teachers move onto our 9th-12th grade Leadership Academy, a collective of students who who meet twice a month to hear from guest speakers, and receive college prep resources, mentoring, and unbelievable job shadow opportunities. These experiences help them match their passion with an EDUCATION and CAREER pathway. Upon graduating senior year of high school, students become nationally certified leaders!

After 12th grade, students entering college or full-time careers become members of our Moguls in Training program, which continues to make sure they are all set for adulthood by connecting them with internships and honing in on important life skills like resume writing, interviewing for a job, and financial literacy! Ultimately, since our model is a peer-to-peer cycle, MITs become the leaders of Powered by Service training and the Leadership Academy sessions. During this stage, MITs receive their International Leadership Certification and select students who show tremendous investment in the program are given the opportunity to travel internationally and lead Powered by Service training for youth in other countries.

100% of students who complete Usher’s New Look are not only graduating from High School, but all are developing into global-minded, servant leaders who give back full-circle to other youth just like them. We like to call it The New Look Effect 🙂 If you’re interested in learning more about how you can get involved in our program, please visit www.BIGGERTHAN.org to Join our Movement!
