New Look Fashion Week Spotlight: Deja Milany Jones, Detroit, 12th Grade

New Look teaches youth to discover what they’re passionate about and then work hard to turn that interest into a career path to work towards in high school and college. Deja, a senior from Detroit New Look, is following her dreams by embracing her passion for fashion.

Meet Deja!  Deja Day 3 final

Hi My name is Deja Milany Jones. I am from Detroit, MI where I am in the 12th grade at Henry Ford Academy School For Creative Studies.

Passion for Fashion

I developed y passion for fashion in the 9th grade when I created my first collection for my very first fashion show, all made from duct tape and paper. I love designing and I try to create something every six months. Currently, I am designing and creating my prom dress. In the past, I have enjoyed creating from both conventional and unconventional materials, meaning things such as paper and plastic. I have won multiple awards for my designs, just recently being two Golds and one Honorable Mention in the Scholastic Art & Writing Competition. I have also participated in many Fashion shows throughout Detroit including The Michigan Fash Fest, and The Detroit Design Festival. Here are two of my designs. The first is called ‘boucle’, which means loop in French. I made it out of magazines. The other is called ‘Swatch’. I created it out of paint swatches.

Deja Day 2 FinalMy Inspiration
I really love wedding & evening gowns and very exaggerated designs so I am absolutely obsessed with the amazing amounts of detail that Zuhair Muriad, Alexander Mcqueen & Tex Savario use.
My Future
I would love to become an owner of my very own label where I could combine the world of fashion with a central purpose of helping raise the self esteem of girls and women specifically in the urban communities. Today I shadow my mentor Dana Keaton who is a very well known Designer in Detroit. I have also shadowed Ralph Taylor who is a well known and experienced parade and costume designer and we have been invited to design costumes for the 2016 Summer Olympics opening Ceremony In Brazil!  From those internships, I also had the opportunity to experience two pre-college programs; one in the summer of 2012 at the College for Creative Studies & the other being in the summer of 2013 at Pratt Institute in NY. I am definitely planning on attending college for Fashion Design but i am also interested in visual arts. I am awaiting Acceptances from Pratt Institute, School for Art Institute in Chicago, College for Creative Studies, & Fashion Institute of Technology.
