Last week, Usher’s New Look was invited to speak at Boston College’s International Corporate Citizenship Conference in Los Angeles hosted by The Travelers Companies, Inc. The theme of this year’s conference was Adaptable Leadership. UNL President Shawn Wilson spoke at the Closing Award Ceremony for the Film Festival portion of the conference on the topic of Embracing “Edutainment”. Wilson talked about the role New Look is playing to build synergy between the Entertainment Industry and the Education Community in order to get today’s youth inspired to learn and pursue further education. He explained how Usher’s New Look has attained 100% high school graduation rates for all youth who participate in its leadership programs. “We meet youth where they are – talent and passion – then we talk about education and career.” New Look alum and recent star of the movie Grown Ups 2, Nadji Jeter, was in attendance and gave testament to the success of UNL. Wilson spoke on how New Look taught Nadji how to make a career goal out of his passion for acting and dance by exposing him to the business side of the entertainment industry at a young age.
Next, UNL Alum and now Program Coordinator, James Harris, took to the stage to talk about the impact New Look has had on his life. “I’m no longer the mentee; I’m the mentor. True power lies in ability to inspire others to do great things.” James inspired the room by sharing his story of how joining New Look gave him a new outlook on life and ultimately led him to discover his true calling of inspiring more future youth leaders. The response from conference attendees was outstanding. Check out these tweets below!
