Usher’s New Look CEO, Yvette Cook, and COO, Gavin McGuire, touched down in Detroit recently for a 3-day visit that focused on increasing support for UNL’s current programs. Currently, the city of Detroit houses all three UNL leadership programs: It is home to one of UNL’s four national Leadership Academies (high school), hosts Powered by Service 1-day Leadership Trainings (middle & high school) and high school seniors coming out of the Detroit Chapter and matriculate into our College Moguls in Training program.
Gavin and Yvette spent the three-day stay making rounds at various current partners and key stakeholders, updating them on the powerful work of UNL in their city, as well as meeting with new potential investors. At Communities in Schools of Detroit, we discussed how we can expand our collaboration within Detroit Public Schools. At the Ford Fund, a longtime supporter and annual presenting sponsor of our signature event, we discussed renewal and opportunities to align our programs to further support their work in the Detroit community. It was exciting to start new conversations and tell our story to new partners like Skillman Foundation, the Community Foundation for South East Michigan, and United Way for South East Michigan.
And of course we had to see our Detroit family! A select group of UNL youth leaders, high school and college, were selected to join Yvette, Gavin and Detroit Program Coordinator, Jarvis Brown, for dinner at the MGM Grande, a UNL partner. The students called the dinner the “State of Detroit”, a spin on State of the Union. College Moguls in Training passed the torch to high school seniors, who shared their college plans with the group.
